There it is, folks. I turned in my last graduate school assignment minutes ago, and have now officially completed my many years in the formal education system. As of this afternoon, you will please address me as “Abby, J.D./M.U.R.P.” at every possible occasion. (As my previous posts indicate, I graduated from law school a week ago. However, the urban planning program didn’t wrap up until today.)

I want to take a moment to think about how this feels. My eyes are a itchy with tears, but the feeling is more of relief than anything. The last four years of schooling have taken a personal and financial toll that I did not expect on the front-end; darker circles under my eyes, little wounds from all the compromises made on spending time with family, friends, and my spouse, still some lingering doubt as to whether this was what I was supposed to have done.

At the same time, I could not have anticipated what incredible people would come into my life because of these recent professional pursuits. (That and the decision my husband and I made to return to the Rocky Mountain West—only a few hours from where I grew up in Wyoming.) The same goes for the hard skills I am eager to finally put to use in a real job setting. Oh, you need some legal advise regarding municipal law in Colorado? Allow me! I know things! I feel rich in people who care about me, with potential to do some good in the world, and with opportunity to rest and think about what this next phase of life can be.

Oh my, how it feels good to be done!

For my Man Crush Monday, I’m choosing Benjamin Rasmussin. Based out of Denver, CO, Rasmussen spends his days currently freelancing for the big dogs such as Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

Aside from being a POYi of 2010 award winner, Rasmussen seems to very lucidly translate what he sees in his head to the resulting photo with ease; something that many photographers, including myself, struggle with. He incorporates a sort of unique symmetry along with a very muted color palette to make the actual message he wants to convey stand out, and it’s absolutely working.

So proud of my lady! She graduated from law school on Friday and is on to some awesome things. Watching Abby go through this process taught me so much about hard work, dedication and consistency. She is the smartest, prettiest and toughest woman I know.
